Getting your group off the ground
Before starting your group, research existing groups in your area to find out if something similar already exists. If it does, could you partner with this group if it meets your aims? That way, you could share resources and experience while supporting an existing group with fresh ideas.
The checklist below will guide you through the first steps to starting a new group. Many of these steps can be adapted so it works for you and your potential members.
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” Margaret Mead, cultural anthropologist and author
How to start your group
1. Create a steering group. This should be a small group of people who are interested in the new group. People you can trust to give you good advice and can work with you through each step of setting up the group.
2. Consult the community. Is there a need for your group? Send out a survey (free on Survey Monkey) or hold a public meeting. This should help shape the future of your group.
3. Hold your first steering group meeting. You will want to decide on the aims of your new group, its structure and the committee members you might need.
4. Hold a public meeting. Informing the community of your plans allows them to get involved as members or on the committee.
5. Create a constitution. This is an outline of your group’s aims and structure in a formal document.
