New Year, New Friends

New Year, New Friends

Is your New Year’s resolution to try something new? Whether you want to get involved in the community or make new friends, Lunch Buddies gives you the opportunity to join a small group of people who get together for lunch and friendly company.

Luke Sanderson and Lindsay White, RVA

The weekly event was set up last year to provide a regular social activity for people looking to improve their well being, make new friends or try a new activity.
Lunch Buddies is run by the members with support from Lindsay White, RVA’s project co-ordinator.

She said: “Food is a great way of bringing people together. We sit round the table and enjoy a meal together. This encourages conversation and debate. Over the months people have got to know each other and many other projects have developed as a result.”
The group meets once a week on a Friday at RVA’s offices on London Road in Bexhill and is part of the TeamUp Bexhill Project. The lunches are supplied by the New Inn in Sidley for a small charge of £3. The lunches vary each week and include favourite dishes such as fish and chips, sausage and mash, chilli and rice, all served with salad.
But Lunch Buddies is not just about food – each week there is a different activity or theme to enjoy, such as books, board games and music. Craft sessions are particularly popular and the new friends have found a shared love of creative activities such as decorating glassware and upcycling furniture. The group are now producing handicrafts which they sell at craft fairs to help raise funds for community projects.
Kathy Barnett, who regularly comes to Lunch Buddies, said “It’s just a lovely group to come along to, chat and make new friends. Everybody gets along and gets involved, but there’s no pressure to attend each time if you have a bad week or have other commitments.”
Lunch Buddies is open to everyone and is a great way to meet new people, learn new skills, build confidence and enjoy a healthy hot meal in a friendly environment. You do need to book in advance so that your lunch can be ordered. You can do this by calling Lindsay on 07984 445604 or emailing her at Alternatively you can pop in to RVA, 47 Bexhill Road (next to Hastings Furniture Service) – we would be delighted to see you.
RVA is the local organisation that drives the voluntary and community sector in Rother. We work with voluntary and community groups which run activities and support services, helping our community to thrive. Although these groups provide a vital service, they operate in isolation, often without funding or support. We provide the resources, expert advice and practical support to help them operate effectively. There is more information about the work we do and the projects we run on our website, so why not take a look!
