RVA/AirS Rural Events – Winter 2015
Three community consultation and engagement events were organised by Action in rural Sussex (AirS), Rother Voluntary Action (RVA) and East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service as part of their work with rural communities across Rother District. The three organisations joined forces to provide these events with the dual purpose of bringing community representatives, volunteers and local organisations together to review the context in which communities are able to provide local services and facilities and to share experiences and expectations about the future of community provision.
The events followed the Annual Rother Local Strategic Partnership meeting which identified the challenge to local communities to effectively “do more” for themselves in the light of continuing cutbacks to public services and that some of the effects of these were likely to be most severe in rural communities and particularly amongst the most vulnerable. The decision to hold 3 events across the District reflected both the “spread out “ geographic reality of 30 small villages across Rother and the feedback to both AirS and RVA from those communities that implied that the more local an event is the more relevant it is considered to be and therefore individuals would be more likely to attend. This was confirmed by the attendance of over 100 participants as follows:
• Robertsbridge Village Hall (40 attendees)
• Battle Memorial Hall (38 attendees)
• Peasmarsh Village Hall (30 attendees)
